Ascent Solar Technologies Inc., Colorado based thin-film PV module manufacturer, has successfully manufactured a 5 meter monolithic flexible thin-film solar module on a polyimide substrate. This is the largest manufactured monolithic module produced so far, according to the company. The size and efficiency of this solar module represents a breakthrough and creates emerging opportunities for the market.
The CIGS based thin-film material used for the manufacture of the module comes from the company’s unique 1.5 MW roll-to-roll manufacturing line. The produced module was encapsulated during manufacture and will be used for a 30 MW solar power plant, currently under construction. The module itself weighs about 2 kg and is capable of outputting about 123 W of power, achieveing apperture efficiency of about 9.1 percent. The newly established product dimension of 5m represents the baseline for the development of the company’s large area flexible building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) products.
